A Yoruba proverb graduation speech by a Nigerian student at Stevenson University sparked applause, reminding all that unity is essential for lasting success

[dropcap]Y[/dropcap]oruba proverb graduation speech lit up the convocation hall at Stevenson University as a proud Nigerian graduate reminded his audience of the power of unity and community.

Speaking with grace and conviction, he delivered a heartfelt message rooted in cultural wisdom.

The graduating student, dressed in his gown and a smile of pride, opened his speech with the Yoruba saying, “Igi kan ò lè dá igbó ṣè,” which means, “One tree alone does not make a forest.”

The phrase, familiar to many from Yoruba land in Nigeria, drew a wave of applause and admiration from the crowd. It was a moment that connected tradition and modern aspiration.

His message centred on togetherness, shared responsibility and the importance of recognising those who walk beside us.

He reminded fellow graduates that no success is ever truly individual, but a culmination of efforts from families, communities, mentors and peers.

He went on to explain that in her culture, proverbs are not just poetic sayings but tools for teaching, guiding and anchoring people through life’s most important milestones.

“In Yoruba land, we believe wisdom is passed through language, and this proverb teaches us to value one another,” he said.

The graduate’s words resonated far beyond cultural boundaries. Many parents and university staff were visibly moved by the speech, which underscored the importance of building bridges between cultures.

His simple but powerful message struck a universal chord: that individual achievement is often the product of collective support.

By bringing a piece of his heritage into such a significant moment, the student not only honoured his roots but also offered the audience a fresh way of seeing their shared journey.

His speech was a celebration of cultural identity, human connection and the enduring truth that no one succeeds alone.

As the convocation ended, his Yoruba proverb graduation speech continued to echo in the hearts of those present.
