Tebas encourages Uche to report racism

Tebas urges Uche to report racism in La Liga

LaLiga president Tebas urges midfielder Uche to report racism incidents to his club or LaLiga, following Uche’s complaints about abuse.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]aLiga president Javier Tebas has advised Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche to report racist incidents to his club or directly to the league.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has urged Nigerian and Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche to formally report any incidents of racism he experiences in Spanish stadiums.

This follows Uche’s recent comments regarding racist abuse directed at him by fans during matches.

“I would have liked him [Uche] to have told me,” Tebas said in response to Uche’s claims, as reported by ESPN. He emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents, stating, “What I ask him is that he does not allow this to happen, that he reports it to his club, to LaLiga, and we will take the appropriate measures. Had we detected it, you can be sure that those people would have been identified and expelled, as has happened in the case of Vinícius and others.”

Tebas mentioned that LaLiga has implemented special surveillance measures, including the use of cameras in areas of the stadiums identified as risk zones for such outcries.

Uche, who is in his first season in LaLiga after joining Getafe from lower-league side Ceuta, made an impactful debut away at San Mames, scoring the equaliser in a thrilling 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

In addition to addressing Uche’s concerns, Tebas has called for harsher penalties, including prison sentences, for fans who engage in racial abuse during matches.

He welcomed a recent court ruling that handed a 12-month suspended sentence to a Mallorca supporter who directed racist insults at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze.

“This sentence is one of many that may come from those [cases] that are still pending at the judicial level,” Tebas stated. “We will continue until the end; if we have to put in jail those that shout or sing about racism, we will be there.”
