Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced the development in a statement on Thursday, highlighting the administration’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities in Nigeria.

According to Onanuga, Tinubu emphasised that these specialised institutions would play a critical role in meeting the educational needs of Nigerians while fostering research, innovation, and national economic growth.

“The institutions will serve as training grounds for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy,” the statement read.

With the addition of these two new universities, Nigeria now has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities, as reported by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The federal government has also made significant strides in higher education expansion.

On February 3, 2025, President Tinubu approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni, Tai, Rivers State.
