Adimabua Chukwuka, a 31-year-old Nigerian man, faces life imprisonment for the first-degree murder of Mario Ferreira, a homeless man, in Toronto

Chukwuka’s arrest came last Friday after a tip-off from the public, and he now faces serious charges related to the brutal attack.

The incident occurred on March 20 when the Toronto Police Service responded to a call from the University of Toronto Campus Safety Special Constables about an unconscious man near 144 College St. Upon arrival, officers, firefighters, and paramedics found Ferreira, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police quickly began an investigation, and Detective Trevor Grieve confirmed the department’s dedication to ensuring justice for the victim and his family.

“We are committed to bringing justice to Mr. Ferreira and his loved ones,” said Grieve, urging anyone with information to come forward.

The investigation took a significant turn on March 21 when homicide investigators released a photo of the suspect, prompting public assistance. Chukwuka was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Security footage revealed chilling details of the attack. The video shows Ferreira lying on a bench at 6 Queen’s Park Crescent at 5:20 a.m., when Chukwuka approached him with debris possibly from a nearby construction site or dumpster.

Without any warning or provocation, Chukwuka repeatedly assaulted Ferreira with the debris before fleeing the scene, still holding the weapon.

“We are continuing to canvas for additional video and information,” Detective Grieve added, emphasising the ongoing efforts to gather further evidence to strengthen the case.

Under Canadian law, a conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for at least 25 years, according to Section 235 (1) of the Canadian Criminal Code. If Chukwuka is convicted, he will face life imprisonment.

The case has attracted widespread attention, as it highlights the violence experienced by vulnerable individuals, such as the homeless, and the grave consequences of unprovoked attacks.

In another related development, Freelanews also reported that a 44-year-old Nigerian man, Alex Sualim, was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison in the United States after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
