Courtois Slams Teammates

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois criticized his teammates’ performance after their 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, leading to their elimination

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]eal Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did not hold back his disappointment, publicly criticizing his teammates following their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday night.

The loss at the Emirates Stadium sealed Real Madrid’s exit from the competition, with Arsenal progressing after a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Real Madrid showed some initial resilience, with Courtois notably saving a 13th-minute penalty from Bukayo Saka to prevent Arsenal from extending their advantage early on.

However, Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock in the second half through Saka, who skillfully dinked Mikel Merino’s pass over Courtois.

Although Vinicius Jr managed to equalize for Real Madrid following an error from William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli struck a decisive winner for Arsenal in stoppage time, securing their place in the semi-finals.

Speaking candidly after the match, Courtois acknowledged that Arsenal deserved their victory over the two legs. However, the experienced Belgian shot-stopper expressed his frustration with the overall performance of the Real Madrid players.

“At half-time we felt that if we had scored the first goal the tie would have been open, in the end they found the first goal, we tied it quickly, you keep believing but we weren’t successful up front,” Courtois stated.

We lost against a superior Arsenal and we have to accept it,” said Thibaut Courtois.

He pointedly noted the lack of significant threat from Real Madrid’s attack, saying, “I don’t think (David) Raya had to make a single great save.”

Courtois admitted the superiority of their opponents, stating, “We lost against a superior Arsenal and we have to accept it.

In the end, they’re a team that defends well, is well organised, presses well, and it’s difficult to find space. We put in a lot of crosses, but this year we don’t have Joselu, a natural striker up front.”

Despite the disappointment of the Champions League exit, Courtois urged his team to focus on their remaining objectives.

“We have to analyse carefully what we can do better. We have a lot of season ahead of us, we have the League on the line, the Cup in ten days, and then the Club World Cup.

We thank the fans. Thinking about a comeback was great, and I hope we can bring them some joy this season.”
