[dropcap]H[/dropcap]ospital negligence is at the centre of a probe at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, where eight staff members including four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants are under investigation following a viral video that allegedly showed accident victims left without urgent care.

The video, which made rounds on social media over the weekend, sparked nationwide outrage. It depicted victims of a road accident reportedly abandoned in the hospital’s Emergency Unit, despite being brought in by a good Samaritan. One staff member was alleged to have refused care due to the unavailability of gloves.

At a press briefing on Monday, the hospital addressed the controversy. Dr Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services, confirmed that those seen in the video have since received medical attention and have been discharged.

He emphasised that any staff member found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty would be held fully accountable.

“All the staff who were there on that particular day are going to be investigated. They are up to eight — nurses, attendants, doctors. For now, we have four doctors, two nurses, and two health assistants,” said Dr Muftau.

The Federal Government has since launched a formal inquiry, ordered by the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, who promised that the findings would be made public.

Dr Muftau also refuted claims that the hospital was overwhelmed at the time, asserting that FMC Abuja remains adequately staffed.

“As I speak with you, we have over 100 consultants in various specialities. In neurosurgery alone, we have three,” he stated.
