Otunba Gbenga Daniel, engineer, ex Ogun governor, and senator. Explore his purposeful path in governance, enterprise, and national service.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel stands out in a country of immense potential and complex challenges.

Nigeria’s size and resources are vast, yet poverty, corruption, and insecurity have strained hope. His public life sets out to answer this reality with purpose, competence, and results.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel frames his vision around good governance, economic development, and social justice. He argues for firm action against corruption, transparency in public life, and respect for the rule of law.

He also champions access to healthcare, education, and housing, with policies that reduce inequality and open opportunities to all.

Born on 6 April 1956 in Ibadan to Most Rev Adebola Daniel of Makun, Sagamu, and Madam Olaitan Daniel of Omu Ijebu, Otunba Gbenga Daniel grew up in a home steeped in faith and service.

At Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, he excelled in debates and quiz contests that sharpened his intellect. He completed A Level studies at The Polytechnic Ibadan, then read engineering at the University of Lagos.

As an undergraduate he won scholarships and came under the influence of Prof Ayodele Awojobi, whose brilliance shaped his decision to pursue engineering.

He became a winner on Awojobi’s television quiz show Mastermind and joined the Committee of Friends around Chief Obafemi Awolowo, which later became the Unity Party of Nigeria. His father later insisted that he pause politics to focus on academics, and he did.

During national service at the School of Engineering, Lagos State Polytechnic, Otunba Gbenga Daniel supervised construction of the engineering complex and conducted semester examinations.

Management described the feat as remarkable in an environment where examination fraud was common. He earned an MBA at the University of Lagos and later attended Lagos Business School for an executive programme in 1990.

In enterprise, Otunba Gbenga Daniel founded Kresta Laurel in 1990, an electro mechanical engineering firm, and later built Conference Hotels in Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Abeokuta, and the Isheri axis of Lagos. He also joined Afenifere under Pa Abraham Adesanya and quietly supported NADECO during the struggle against military rule, aiding members who sought asylum abroad.

His 2003 campaign for governor was described as electric. Otunba Gbenga Daniel toured all 236 wards of Ogun State to meet stakeholders face to face. He won the governorship on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party with 449,335 votes against the incumbent’s 231,982, a record margin.

In office he promoted youth development, empowered the Nigerian Youth Council of the state, built roads and recreational centres, and established a University of Education. Ogun hosted matches of the FIFA U 17 World Cup in 2009 at the Gateway International Stadium.

In February 2009, Otunba Gbenga Daniel authorised a reduction of fees at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to ₦7,000 after talks with the National Association of Nigerian Students.

He initiated the Ogun State Agro Cargo Airport at Ilishan Remo to speed agricultural exports and proposed facilities for regular passenger services. He also established three free trade zones across the senatorial districts, including Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, the Olokola Free Trade Zone with a deep seaport plan, and Kajola Free Trade Zone in Ifo.

Nationally, Otunba Gbenga Daniel led the Goodluck Jonathan presidential campaign in the South West in 2010, contributing to the 2011 victory.

In 2017 he ran a sturdy campaign for PDP National Chairman, touring all states and the FCT before withdrawing when the office was zoned to the South South.

In 2018 he served as Director General of Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign organisation and steered the primary victory in Port Harcourt against bookmakers’ predictions.

In February 2021, Otunba Gbenga Daniel joined the All Progressives Congress with a public commitment to national unity and development, even in the face of political witch hunting.

He was named to the CECPC Media and Publicity Sub Committee and the Contact and Strategy Sub Committee.

Long before this, he had supported Yoruba political aspirations and is recorded as donating the first campaign office to Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the start of the Lagos governorship bid.

Returning to elective office, Otunba Gbenga Daniel won the Ogun East Senate seat with 115,147 votes against 58,708 for his closest rival.

As a first time senator he set out a service focused agenda for his constituents in the South West, earning respect among peers in the National Assembly and strong goodwill at home.

Many constituents now urge him to serve again, confident that he will hearken to their voices.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel remains a compelling blend of engineer, entrepreneur, strategist, and public servant.

His record shows steady attention to youth empowerment, infrastructure, education, and economic openings.

In a gateway state searching for credible leadership across all levels of political office, his trajectory stands as a powerful case for purposeful action anchored in experience and service.
