INEC Continuous Voter Registration sees 69,376 Nigerians pre-register online in just 7 hours, with majority being youths

INEC Continuous Voter Registration got off to a strong start on Monday, with 69,376 Nigerians completing online pre-registration within the first seven hours of the exercise.

The Independent National Electoral Commission disclosed this in a statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

“The registration portal went live at 8:30 a.m., but by 3:30 p.m., just seven hours later, as many as 69,376 Nigerians had pre-registered online,” Olumekun said.

Of the figure, 33,803 (48.7%) were male, while 35,573 (51.3%) were female. Youths aged 18–34 made up the largest share, with 48,033 (69.2%) registrations.

The digital portal, available 24/7 via https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, will run alongside in-person registration, which begins Monday, August 25, 2025, at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide. The physical registration will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.

The Commission explained that the two options will run simultaneously throughout the exercise, enabling both new registrants and those who began online to complete their process in person.

INEC further announced that weekly updates will be provided, breaking down registration data by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability.

The Commission also reminded Nigerians that voter registration is strictly for citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered, warning that double or multiple registrations remain a violation of the law.

However, the INEC Continuous Voter Registration process allows for inter-state and intra-state transfers of voter cards, as well as the replacement of lost or damaged cards.

“This exercise is about inclusivity, credibility, and access,” Olumekun said, urging eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity.
