ASUU LASUSTECH warns that Nigeria’s public universities face collapse unless the government honours agreements to fund education and protect autonomy

ASUU LASUSTECH has reaffirmed its resolute commitment to saving Nigeria’s public university system from collapse, stressing that its struggle is about the nation’s future, not just salaries.

At a press conference on the Ikorodu campus of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Chapter Chairperson Comrade Yisa Oluwatoyin Anthonio declared that ASUU’s decade-long struggle is rooted in the Federal Government’s refusal to implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

The agreement addresses fair remuneration, research funding, improved infrastructure, and the protection of university autonomy and academic freedom.

“Our fight is not merely for personal gain but for the survival of a system that shapes Nigeria’s intellectual and developmental future,” Anthonio said.

He highlighted the dire realities: decaying facilities, inadequate research resources, and a brain drain that weakens morale and erodes quality.

“Without urgent intervention, our universities risk becoming relics in a knowledge-driven world,” he warned.

ASUU LASUSTECH stressed that strong universities are essential for innovation, critical thinking, and leadership.

“A nation that neglects its universities forsakes its potential for growth and prosperity. We are fighting to ensure Nigeria does not stagnate,” Anthonio added.

The union demanded the full implementation of outstanding agreements, including various MoUs and MoAs, noting that successive governments have sidelined them.

It pledged solidarity with ASUU’s national body, ready for dialogue, engagement, or industrial action.

Calling for public support, Anthonio urged parents, students, and stakeholders to view ASUU’s struggle as a collective moral duty.

“This is a moral imperative to secure quality education and a thriving nation,” he said.

ASUU LASUSTECH vowed to continue pressing until government commitments are honoured. With universities at a critical juncture, the chapter insists revitalising public education is urgent to keep it a beacon of progress and hope for future generations.
