Nigerian community in South Africa mobilises support for Super Eagles ahead of World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein

Nigerian Community leaders in South Africa have announced a large-scale mobilisation to support the Super Eagles ahead of Tuesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein.

Speaking to The PUNCH, Smart Nwobi, President of the Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), confirmed that the umbrella organisation for Nigerians in South Africa will visit Bloemfontein ahead of the Group C clash at Toyota Stadium.

“The leadership of NUSA will visit Bloemfontein ahead of this crucial World Cup qualifier to mobilise our people residing in the city,” Nwobi stated.

He described the fixture as a critical moment for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup dreams, and called on Nigerians across South Africa to show up in numbers and cheer the national team to victory.

While rallying support, Nwobi also urged Nigerians to be law-abiding and disciplined before, during, and after the match.

“We will also inform Nigerians to be law-abiding before and after the game. It is important that we maintain discipline at all times in any part of South Africa.”

The match holds significant implications for Nigeria’s World Cup qualification, as the Super Eagles trail group leaders South Africa, who currently sit atop with 16 points.

A win in Bloemfontein could revive Nigeria’s fading hopes of securing the sole automatic ticket from the group.

Nwobi appealed to both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to provide match-day support materials such as jerseys and tickets to boost unity and morale.

“The Super Eagles can count on unwavering support from Nigerians across South Africa,” he affirmed.

He also pointed to a successful turnout earlier in March when Nigerian supporters came out in full force during the U-17 women’s team’s fixture in South Africa — a match that ended in victory for the Flamingos.

With stakes rising and tensions building ahead of the high-profile clash, the Nigerian community abroad is rallying behind the national team in a show of patriotism and unity.
