ICPC Project Tracking North Nigeria reveals ₦271bn in monitored projects, with over ₦7.2bn recovered. Citizens, media praised for flagging corruption

ICPC Project Tracking North Nigeria has uncovered projects valued at ₦271.054 billion across the North-East and North-West regions within the past two years, according to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Speaking during a one-day media engagement in Kano on Thursday, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu revealed that 1,440 projects were tracked in total, with 767 projects in the North-East valued at ₦112.737 billion, and 673 projects in the North-West worth ₦158.317 billion.

“But the real story in project tracking is this: citizens and journalists who flagged abandoned projects made these interventions possible, ensuring resources reached the intended beneficiaries,” Dr. Aliyu stated, highlighting the vital role of public vigilance and media integrity in governance.

The event brought together media practitioners from the North-West and North-East, as the ICPC continues efforts to strengthen accountability in Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions.

On asset recovery, the ICPC boss disclosed that a total of ₦7.269 billion and $1.066 million was recovered in the North-West, while ₦43.335 million was recovered in the North-East.

The agency also seized 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and 3 farmlands in ongoing anti-corruption efforts.

Dr. Aliyu emphasized that tackling corruption in the region is not only about good governance, but also a matter of peace, trust, and development.

“By strengthening ICPC’s capacity, we are not only blocking leakages but ensuring that resources reach citizens who need them most,” he said.

The chairman called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the long-awaited Whistleblower Protection Bill, stressing that citizen engagement depends on legal assurance and protection.

He further urged the media to embrace investigative journalism, avoid sensationalism, and help hold public officials accountable with evidence-based reporting.

“The media must be a partner in development—not just reporting the news, but shaping the future through truth and accountability,” Aliyu concluded.
