Kano mass wedding to join 2,000 couples, as state revives scheme to reduce social vices and support women, widows, and low-income families

Kano mass wedding plans are underway once again, as the state government has directed the Hisbah Board to begin preparations to marry off 2,000 couples under its social welfare programme.

This initiative, reintroduced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, seeks to assist low-income families, widows, divorcees, and spinsters who are unable to afford the cost of traditional marriage ceremonies.

Speaking to PUNCH Online on Thursday, the Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, confirmed the directive and said preparations would commence shortly.

“We are planning to conduct a mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government,” he said.

Although no specific date has been set for the event, Aminudeen explained that strict procedures must be followed.

All registered couples will undergo compulsory medical screening, including tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use.

“Anyone who fails to present themselves for medical screening will be automatically disqualified from the programme,” he added.

The Kano mass wedding scheme, originally introduced under past administrations, was revived by Governor Yusuf to tackle rising social issues such as prostitution and to promote marriage among the vulnerable in society.

The scheme also aims to relieve families who struggle with the financial burden of traditional marriage rites.

Observers say the move may help reduce social vices and offer protection to women, particularly in a state where many are left vulnerable due to divorce, widowhood, or poverty.

The programme is expected to include full sponsorship of wedding ceremonies, dowries, and starter kits for couples to begin married life.

While critics argue that the scheme is more symbolic than structural, supporters say it reflects a compassionate and practical approach to social welfare in a deeply traditional society.

As preparations begin, many residents are expected to register for what has become a landmark social policy in Kano’s religious and cultural landscape.
