Omoyele Sowore and 12 others granted ₦500,000 bail each in Abuja over the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, court rules

Omoyele Sowore has been granted bail by a Magistrate’s Court in Kuje, Abuja, following his arrest alongside twelve others over the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

The court on Friday approved bail in the sum of ₦500,000 for each defendant, with two sureties in like sum.

The decision comes days after the activist and publisher was apprehended for allegedly inciting public disturbance and breach of peace.

Those granted bail include Sowore; Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu; Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu; and ten other protesters.

According to PUNCH Online, the thirteen defendants were arrested and arraigned in connection with the October 20 protest in Abuja, which demanded Kanu’s immediate release.

While Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others were arrested during the demonstration and remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Sowore was detained three days later — on October 23 — at the Federal High Court premises in Abuja. He had attended Kanu’s terrorism trial to show solidarity before being taken into custody.

The court’s decision to grant bail was met with relief from supporters and activists who had called for the release of the detained individuals.
