An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced three people to death by hanging for robbing an 87-year-old woman of N186,000 and a wristwatch

An Ekiti State High Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, on Monday sentenced three individuals to death by hanging after finding them guilty of armed robbery and conspiracy.

The convicts Shadrack Apos (30), Lucky Akpos (33), and Adunola Precious (24)  were charged with robbing an 87-year-old woman, Victoria Folorunso, of N186,000 and a wristwatch at her residence in Ifaki Ekiti.

According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred on June 12, 2024, when the defendants conspired and executed the robbery while armed with a gun and wooden planks, in violation of Sections 421 and 321 (2)(b) of the Ekiti State Criminal Laws, 2021.

During the trial, the elderly victim recounted the terrifying experience.

“I was sleeping around 1am when I suddenly saw two persons in my room, one holding a gun to my forehead and the other a plank. They asked for all the money I had,” she testified.

She revealed that the robbers took N147,000, her wristwatch, and even coerced her into promising to withdraw N3 million from her account for them to collect later through her househelp, Adunola Precious, who was later discovered to be complicit in the crime.

The prosecutor, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, presented two witnesses and tendered key exhibits, including the defendants’ confessional statements, a search warrant, and a wooden gun.

In his judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The 3rd defendant, Adunola Precious, must have opened the door to enable the robbers to gain entry, showing her pivotal role in the plan,” Ogunmoye ruled.

He concluded that the defendants jointly planned and executed the robbery and therefore found them guilty as charged.

Delivering the sentence, Justice Ogunmoye declared:

“The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants are to be hanged by the neck until they are dead. May God have mercy on their souls.”

The conviction brings closure to a case that shocked residents of Ifaki Ekiti, highlighting the court’s zero tolerance for violent crime in the state.
