PTAD pension arrears payment delivers major relief to retirees

PTAD pension arrears payment brings relief as N3.9bn is cleared for 91,146 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme

PTAD pension arrears payment has brought a wave of relief to thousands of retirees after the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate confirmed it had cleared N3.9bn owed to 91,146 eligible pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Friday by the Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Olugbenga Ajayi.

According to Ajayi, the settlement forms part of the N32,000 increment recently approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The breakdown includes N1.9bn paid to 59,865 pensioners in the Parastatals Pension Department and N830m disbursed to 12,976 retirees under the Civil Service Pension Department.

A further N620m went to 9,689 pensioners in the Police Pension Department, while N551m was issued to 8,616 pensioners within the Nigeria Customs Service, Immigration Service and Prisons Pension Department.

The PTAD pension arrears payment underscores the government’s renewed push to improve pensioners’ welfare.

Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya reaffirmed that clearing outstanding liabilities remains a firm priority of the Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

She said the directorate is committed to maintaining transparency and ensuring that all verified pensioners receive their entitlements promptly.

Earlier, PTAD announced that implementation of the new pension increments under the DBS would begin in the September 2025 payroll cycle.

The package includes a fixed N32,000 addition alongside percentage increases of 10.66 percent and 12.95 percent for qualifying categories. In total, the adjustment is expected to benefit about 832,000 pensioners under PTAD’s management.

Retirees welcomed the latest PTAD pension arrears payment as a powerful step toward restoring confidence in the system.

Many say the timely settlement of entitlements not only eases their financial burden but also serves as reassurance that longstanding pension issues are finally receiving sustained attention.
