Tyler the Creator Grammy album cover win marks the first-ever award in the new category, recognising the visual design of Chromakopia
Tyler Okonma, professionally known as Tyler, the Creator, made history at the 2026 Grammy Awards after winning the first-ever Best Album Cover award for the visual design of his album Chromakopia.

The award was presented in Los Angeles on Sunday night and recognised Okonma in his role as art director for the project, marking a landmark moment for the Recording Academy’s expanding recognition of visual artistry in music.
The Best Album Cover category was officially introduced in June 2025 as part of the Academy’s effort to reflect the growing cultural influence of album visuals in an increasingly digital music landscape. It is open to full-length albums across all genres, including streaming-only releases.
Released on October 28, 2024, through Columbia Records, Chromakopia stood out for its bold and original visual identity, edging out a competitive field of high-profile nominees.
These included Debí Tirar Más Fotos by Bad Bunny, The Crux by Djo, Glory by Perfume Genius, and Moisturizer by Wet Leg.
A deluxe edition titled Chromakopia+ followed in October 2025, featuring an alternate cover that preserved the album’s distinctive aesthetic while expanding its visual narrative.
According to the Recording Academy’s guidelines, entries in the Best Album Cover category must feature predominantly new artwork released within the eligibility year and be supported by high-resolution digital submissions.
The Academy clarified that the category exists alongside, rather than replaces, the Best Recording Package award, which focuses on physical presentation.
Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason Jr. described the introduction of the category as both timely and necessary, noting that album artwork remains a powerful cultural marker even without physical ownership.
He said iconic visuals continue to shape how audiences experience and remember music.
The Tyler the Creator Grammy album cover victory was his first win of the 2026 ceremony, with the artist still in contention for several major awards, including Album of the Year.
He also received nominations across rap and alternative categories, underscoring his cross-genre influence.
Elsewhere at the ceremony, Kendrick Lamar won Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, while Best Rap Performance went to Clipse’s Pusha T and Malice alongside Lamar and Pharrell Williams.
The Cure claimed Best Alternative Music Album for Songs of a Lost World.
