Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde family opposition advice urges couples to seek understanding but reconsider marriage if hostility persists

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has advised couples facing resistance from a partner’s family to make sincere efforts to build understanding before ending their relationship, while cautioning that marriage should be reconsidered if hostility proves impossible to resolve.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde gave the advice during an interview on The Morayo Show shared on YouTube on Wednesday.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde said partners should first attempt to win over disapproving relatives through patience and honest engagement, noting that some families initially react based on bias rather than personal experience.

“As an Omotola, I would advise that if the families of the spouse don’t like you, try everything you possibly can to make them understand you,” she said. “But there are some parents that are just hell-bent on not going to like you.”

The actress explained that prejudice, including ethnic background or preconceived opinions, can shape resistance long before genuine interaction occurs.

According to Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, such entrenched attitudes may make acceptance unlikely regardless of effort.

“There is nothing you’re going to do. They already have prejudices. They’ve decided that maybe they don’t like you because you’re from a particular place in Nigeria or the world,” she said.

While acknowledging that some families may eventually soften their stance, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde described such shifts as uncertain.

She warned that apparent acceptance could later revert to hostility, creating instability within the marriage.

The actress emphasised that marriage is already a demanding lifelong commitment and should not begin under avoidable strain.

“Marriage in itself is already an institution where you’re going to face a lot. It’s a lifetime journey,” she said.

“So why do you want to start with people that already have something against you? Every step of the way you’re going to need support.”

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde concluded that entering a union without family backing could lead to a rough and emotionally draining path, urging couples to think critically before committing where persistent opposition remains.
