From Tonto Dikeh to Omotola, five Nollywood stars tried music but couldn’t succeed in the industry

Several popular Nigerian celebrities attempted to transition from acting to music, hoping to expand their careers, but most struggled to achieve the same level of success.

  1. Tonto Dikeh: In 2013, the actress-turned-politician released singles like “HI” and “Itz Ova,” collaborating with artists such as Solid Star and Terry G. Unfortunately, her songs failed to gain traction, prompting her to return to acting and brand influencing. She later admitted that poor guidance from friends contributed to the failure.
  2. Jim Iyke: Known for his dynamic acting, Iyke released a single titled ‘Who Am I’ with 2Face Idibia, which received some airplay. He also launched an album, ‘Born to Do This,’ featuring several collaborations, but it didn’t meet expectations, limiting his success in music.
  3. Genevieve Nnaji: In 2005, during a brief acting hiatus, Genevieve released the song ‘No More’ and secured a recording deal in Ghana. Despite her efforts, the music failed to gain momentum, and she returned to acting where her star power remained strong.
  4. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde: Famously known as Omosexy, she released two albums with singles such as ‘Missing You,’ ‘Feel Alright,’ and ‘Gba.’ Despite her popularity in Nollywood, her music did not capture mainstream attention, leading her back to a successful acting career.
  5. Patience Ozokwor: The veteran actress, known as Mama G, explored music in the mid-2000s, releasing songs like “Ihe Neme N’uwa,” “Iyo Ngwo Ngwo,” and “National Moi Moi.” Although her tracks initially attracted attention, they failed to maintain lasting popularity, and she refocused on acting.

The challenges these celebrities faced show that success in acting does not automatically translate to success in music.

Factors such as audience expectations, musical talent, promotion, and timing play crucial roles in whether an actor can thrive in the music industry.

Their experiences highlight that diversifying careers is risky, and careful planning is essential for crossover success.
