Olumide Oworu defends bold move into partisan politics

Olumide Oworu partisan politics decision stems from concerns over poor policymaking and Nigeria’s future, the actor reveals in a candid interview

Olumide Oworu, Nollywood actor and former Lagos State House of Assembly candidate, has explained his decision to venture into partisan politics, citing concerns about poor policymaking and the country’s uncertain future.

Speaking in a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, the 31-year-old said his motivation was rooted in a desire to be among policymakers whose decisions directly affect citizens.

Olumide Oworu said Nigeria’s trajectory in recent years had prompted him to act rather than remain on the sidelines.

The actor noted that policies enacted today would ultimately shape the lives of younger generations, including his own future family.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here,” Olumide Oworu said.

The actor added that being part of the decision-making process was essential, as government policies affect everyone regardless of status.

He stressed that many current political leaders are ageing, leaving younger citizens to bear the long-term consequences of present-day governance choices.

“And also, most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” Olumide Oworu explained.

In the 2023 general elections, Olumide Oworu contested for the Surulere 1 constituency seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly under the Labour Party but lost to fellow Nollywood actor Desmond Elliott.

Despite that setback, Olumide Oworu partisan politics ambition appears undiminished.

The actor maintained that civic participation remains a necessary step for young Nigerians seeking to influence the nation’s direction.
