Liverpool West Ham win lifts Reds into Premier League top five after a 5-2 victory at Anfield amid title race pressure

Liverpool Football Club climbed into the Premier League’s top five after securing an emphatic 5-2 victory over West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday, strengthening their push for UEFA Champions League qualification.

The Liverpool West Ham win marked a fourth consecutive victory in all competitions for manager Arne Slot, whose side established early dominance through three first-half goals originating from set-piece situations.

Forward Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring before captain Virgil van Dijk doubled the advantage with a commanding header.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister extended Liverpool’s lead before the interval, placing the hosts firmly in control.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities remained evident, allowing West Ham opportunities that kept the contest competitive for long spells.

After the break, Dutch internationals Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong added further goals to seal what ultimately proved a decisive result.

However, West Ham responded through Tomas Soucek and Valentin Castellanos, exposing gaps in Liverpool’s back line and nearly reducing the deficit further.

The defeat represents another damaging setback for West Ham United, who remain two points adrift of Premier League safety as the relegation battle intensifies.

Liverpool’s rise into the top five carries added significance, with English clubs’ strong performances in European competitions expected to grant an additional Champions League qualification spot next season.

The result moves Liverpool three points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea Football Club, who face a challenging away fixture against league leaders Arsenal Football Club on Sunday.

Meanwhile, defending champions Manchester City Football Club continue their pursuit of Arsenal at the summit. Manager Pep Guardiola’s side trail the Gunners by five points but retain a crucial game in hand.

Manchester City will, however, be without prolific striker Erling Haaland, who misses the trip to face Leeds United Football Club due to a knee injury, adding pressure ahead of a demanding encounter against a side beaten only twice in their last 16 matches across all competitions.

The Liverpool West Ham win keeps the race for Champions League qualification fiercely competitive while adding fresh intrigue to both the title contest and relegation struggle as the season enters a decisive phase.
