Wizkid global stardom story traces his journey from Lagos to Grammy success, redefining Afrobeats on the world stage

Wizkid, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, has built one of the most compelling careers in contemporary African music, transforming a modest upbringing in Lagos into a story of global dominance and cultural influence.

Born on 16 July 1990 in Ojuelegba, a densely populated suburb of Lagos, Wizkid grew up as the last of 12 children in a large interfaith family.

Financial constraints shaped his early years, limiting access to professional recording facilities and forcing him to rely on persistence rather than privilege.

Before fame, Wizkid became known in local circles as a relentless studio presence, spending hours at Point Beat Studios owned by OJB Jezreel in the hope of securing brief recording sessions.

His journey began at the age of 11 under the name Lil’ Prinz, and he later formed a church group called the Glorious Five, experiences that sharpened his craft and discipline.

The decisive breakthrough arrived in 2009 when Wizkid signed with Empire Mates Entertainment, led by Banky W.

The release of “Holla at Your Boy” in 2010 announced his commercial arrival, while his debut album Superstar in 2011 cemented his position as a household name within Nigeria’s fast-evolving pop scene.

Wizkid global stardom accelerated in 2016 through a collaboration with Drake on the chart-topping hit “One Dance”.

The record expanded his international audience and earned him recognition in the Guinness World Records, making him the first Afrobeats artiste to achieve that distinction.

His contribution to Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” further elevated his global standing, securing a Grammy Award and reinforcing his place within the upper ranks of the music industry.

In 2020, Wizkid released Made in Lagos, a defining project anchored by the hit single “Essence”.

The song became the first Nigerian track to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, a milestone that underscored his pivotal role in mainstreaming Afrobeats worldwide.

The album was widely regarded as a cultural moment, expanding the genre’s global footprint.

Despite commanding multimillion-dollar performance fees and headlining major festivals such as Rolling Loud, Wizkid has consistently framed his success in personal terms.

The artiste has often described lifting his family out of poverty as his proudest achievement.

From waiting outside studios for recording scraps to dominating international charts, Wizkid global stardom reflects grit, strategic collaboration and unwavering artistic vision.

His journey stands as powerful proof that talent, sharpened by discipline and resilience, can transcend circumstance and reshape the global soundscape.
