Nigeria UK migration deals signed to boost border security, tackle immigration crime and expand business visa access for firms

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed a series of agreements aimed at strengthening Nigeria UK migration deals, focusing on border security, organised immigration crime and business engagement.

The accords were signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during official engagements in the UK, according to a statement issued by his media aide, Babatunde, on Thursday.

The agreements include a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on Cooperation on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security, and another on expanding business visas for UK companies operating in Nigeria.

Speaking at the signing, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described the development as a significant step towards building a transparent and efficient migration framework that aligns with national interests and global obligations.

He said the Nigeria UK migration deals reflect a shared determination to create a system that is safe, orderly and mutually beneficial, adding that the partnership could serve as a model for future bilateral agreements.

The minister highlighted Nigeria’s collaboration with the UK Home Office, noting that the expansion of business visas is expected to drive socio-economic growth, particularly in light of ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He added that easing barriers to legal migration and trade remains central to Nigeria’s ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy.

The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, praised the strengthened ties, describing Nigeria as a leading partner in successful bilateral relations due to the scope of cooperation achieved.

Similarly, the UK Trade Envoy, Florence Eshalomi, said the business visa component of the agreement would deliver tangible benefits for both countries and support Nigeria’s economic growth trajectory.

The agreements are expected to enhance coordination in migration management, strengthen efforts to combat organised immigration crime, and facilitate smoother business operations between both nations.

The development marks a renewed phase in Nigeria-UK relations, underscoring a strategic alignment on security and economic priorities in an increasingly interconnected global environment.
