Chelsea £262m loss sets Premier League record as the club reports historic pre-tax deficit despite strong revenue and recent trophies

Chelsea FC has reported a Premier League record pre-tax loss of £262.4 million for the year ending June 30, 2025, marking one of the most significant financial deficits in English football history.

The Chelsea £262m loss surpasses the previous record held by Manchester City, who posted a £197.5 million pre-tax loss during the 2010/11 season.

Despite the heavy losses, Chelsea recorded revenue of £490.9 million, the second-highest in the club’s history, boosted partly by earnings from their Club World Cup success.

The club attributed the deficit to increased operating costs during the 2024/25 financial year compared to the previous period, when reported profits were significantly influenced by internal financial restructuring.

Chelsea FC also confirmed ongoing compliance with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules over the three-year assessment period, which permits controlled levels of financial losses.

However, the club has recently faced scrutiny after admitting breaches related to undisclosed payments under former owner Roman Abramovich, resulting in a £10.75 million fine and a suspended transfer ban.

The Premier League opted not to impose a points deduction, citing the cooperation of the current ownership group led by Todd Boehly, which self-reported the issues during the investigation process.

In a separate disclosure, Chelsea’s women’s team also recorded a £17.1 million loss despite generating £21.3 million in revenue, even after winning the Women’s Super League for three consecutive seasons.
