Mohbad’s father kicks against court-ordered secret DNA test

Court’s move to appoint secret lab sparks fresh tension in ongoing paternity battle over late singer’s son

Mohbad paternity DNA dispute deepens as singer’s father rejects court plan for secret lab testing over son Liam Aloba

Mr Joseph Aloba, father of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has rejected a Magistrate Court ruling to appoint an independent laboratory for a DNA test in the ongoing paternity dispute over Liam Aloba.

Paternity DNA dispute took a dramatic turn during proceedings on Tuesday, when the court disclosed that previously suggested facilities lacked the capacity to conduct specialised tissue-based or post-mortem DNA analysis.

In response, the court ruled that it would appoint a “secret” independent laboratory, unknown to all parties involved, in a bid to ensure neutrality and prevent allegations of bias.

Mr Aloba, however, strongly opposed the decision in open court, raising concerns over transparency and credibility.

He argued that a test conducted by an undisclosed laboratory could not be trusted, citing the inconclusive toxicology report previously carried out on his late son as a reason for his scepticism.

The grieving father further insisted on his right to engage a private pathologist to conduct a parallel DNA examination alongside the court-appointed process, describing the move as necessary to guarantee fairness.

Counsel to Mr Aloba reinforced the position, stating that equity must be upheld, particularly as the singer’s widow, Wunmi, was alleged to have conducted a private DNA test without publicly releasing the results.

The dispute over Liam Aloba’s paternity has remained a sensitive and defining issue following Mohbad’s death in September 2023, which triggered widespread public attention and calls for justice.

The court has yet to deliver a ruling on the request for a parallel independent test, leaving the matter unresolved as tensions persist between the parties.
