Ekiti fake kidnap claim sparks outrage as police arrest local government vice chairman over alleged staged abduction

Hon. Chief Mrs. Grace Ogunleye, Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, has reportedly been arrested by the police over allegations that she staged her own kidnapping after failing to fulfil financial obligations linked to a money exchange arrangement.

The incident, which initially triggered fear across the community, was first reported on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after claims emerged that armed men abducted the council official along the Ipere to Iludun Ekiti road.

According to the earlier account circulated within the area, Ogunleye had allegedly left the Ilejemeje Local Government Secretariat after official duties and was returning to Ido-Ekiti when gunmen intercepted her vehicle.

The reports claimed the attackers forced her into a nearby bush, abandoned her vehicle at the scene and switched off her mobile phone to prevent security operatives from tracing her location.

The alleged abduction sparked anxiety among residents and political associates, with concerns growing over worsening insecurity on roads within the state.

However, fresh findings by investigators reportedly revealed that the kidnapping story was staged.

Security sources alleged that the local government vice chairman orchestrated the dramatic incident herself in connection with unresolved financial promises following a money exchange transaction.

Police authorities are yet to release a detailed official statement outlining the full circumstances surrounding the alleged plot or the exact charges she may face.

The Ekiti fake kidnap claim has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many residents expressing disappointment over the development and condemning the alleged misuse of public sympathy and security resources.

Observers say the incident further highlights growing concerns over false kidnapping claims, which security experts warn could distract law enforcement agencies from tackling genuine abduction cases across the country.
