El Chapo nephew arrested in Mexico as security forces capture US-wanted suspect linked to the Sinaloa cartel
Mexican security forces have arrested a United States-wanted nephew of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin Guzman during an operation in the northern border state of Sonora, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Mexico’s Secretary of Security, Omar Garcia Harfuch, disclosed the development in a statement posted on X, describing the suspect as a nephew of the former Sinaloa cartel leader widely known as “El Chapo”.
Although officials identified the suspect only as Isai “N”, Mexican media outlets named him as Isai Martinez Zepeda.
The El Chapo nephew arrested operation is being viewed as another significant move in ongoing efforts by Mexican and US authorities to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks linked to the powerful Sinaloa cartel.
Garcia Harfuch stated that the suspect is also wanted in the United States, though authorities did not immediately provide details regarding the specific charges against him.
A spokesperson for the Mexican security ministry told AFP that officials could not immediately confirm media reports claiming the suspect had previously been arrested in 2008 while allegedly in possession of high-calibre weapons.
It also remained unclear when or how he regained his freedom after the earlier reported detention.
Joaquin Guzman, once considered one of the world’s most powerful drug traffickers, was extradited to the United States in 2017 after twice escaping from Mexican prisons in dramatic fashion.
He is currently serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison in Colorado after being convicted on multiple charges including drug trafficking, money laundering and organised crime offences.
Two of his sons, Ovidio Guzman and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, are also imprisoned in the United States on narcotics trafficking charges.
Security analysts say the El Chapo nephew arrested development highlights continued pressure on members and associates of the Sinaloa cartel as authorities intensify cross-border anti-drug operations.

The Sinaloa cartel remains one of the most influential and violent criminal organisations in the Americas despite repeated arrests and extraditions of senior figures.
