Popular actor and singer Gabriel Afolayan has said the increasing recognition of Yoruba-language films is the result of sustained effort, consistency and dedication within the industry, describing the trend as a natural outcome of years of creative work.

Afolayan made the remarks while reacting to the growing visibility and acceptance of Yoruba-language cinema across wider audiences, noting that practitioners in the industry have long worked towards such recognition.
“There is nothing strange about it because we have put in the work. If one works hard, one should get the dividends for it,” he said.
According to him, the current success being enjoyed by Yoruba-language productions reflects steady progress rather than sudden popularity, adding that the industry is now reaping the rewards of long-term commitment.

Explaining the origin of his nickname, Gabbylucciii, Afolayan said it represents both personal identity and ambition, with “Lucci” symbolising leadership and excellence, while “Gabby” is derived from his name, Gabriel.
He also spoke about the demands of acting, stressing that every role presents unique challenges that require deep preparation and emotional investment.
“All the roles stretch me… I am a student of the art and I am still learning as well,” he said, adding that no character can be considered more difficult than another due to varying creative demands.
Afolayan emphasised that acting requires research, adaptability and full immersion in character development, noting that each performance comes with its own creative landscape.
He further advised upcoming creatives to focus on mastery of their craft rather than external approval, urging them to trust audience feedback as the ultimate measure of performance.
“Just love what you do, you can’t be scheming… Yours is to get into the character, give it what it needs and let the audience feed you back on that,” he said.
