UK Court remands murder suspect accused in the death of Nigerian national Taiwo Ekerin following an alleged assault in London

A United Kingdom court has remanded 32-year-old Maxwell Oguanaya in custody after he was charged with the murder of 41-year-old Nigerian national Taiwo Ekerin, who died following an alleged assault in Lewisham, south-east London.

The development was confirmed on Sunday by the Metropolitan Police, which said Oguanaya was charged after Ekerin succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation on Lewisham High Street.

According to the police, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at about 4:40am on May 24 and discovered Ekerin with a serious head injury.

Emergency responders from the London Ambulance Service treated Ekerin at the scene before transporting him to hospital for further medical care.

Despite efforts to save him, Ekerin died from his injuries on May 30.

“Police were called at around 04:40hrs on Sunday, 24 May, to Lewisham High Street following reports of an altercation,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

“Officers attended the scene and discovered a 41-year-old man with a serious head injury. He was treated at the scene by colleagues from the London Ambulance Service and taken to the hospital. On Saturday, 30 May, he was sadly pronounced dead.”

The police said Ekerin’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The UK Court Remands Murder Suspect case advanced after Oguanaya, of Eastfield Road, Enfield, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 4 and formally charged the following day.

Oguanaya appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court on June 5, where he was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.

The defendant is scheduled to appear in court again on June 9.

The Metropolitan Police also disclosed that a second man, aged 34, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 5 and remains in police custody while detectives continue their investigation.

Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the circumstances that led to the altercation.

Meanwhile, Ekerin’s twin brother, Kehinde Ekerin, described the incident as an unprovoked attack and launched a public fundraising appeal to support funeral arrangements.

In a message shared through a GoFundMe campaign, Kehinde Ekerin described his late brother as a devoted father, son, brother, uncle and friend whose death had left a profound void within the family.

The appeal stated that Taiwo Ekerin was particularly known for his kindness, warmth and sense of humour, adding that his daughter now faces life without her father.

The family is seeking financial assistance to cover funeral expenses and provide what it described as a dignified farewell for the deceased.

As of the time of reporting, the fundraising campaign had raised £3,710 towards its £10,000 target.

The case has attracted attention within the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom and comes days after another high-profile criminal case involving the death of a Nigerian national in England.
