Police confirm a Delta murder in which a suspected internet fraudster killed his girlfriend in Warri, debunking gruesome beheading rumours while the suspect remains in custody

A suspected internet fraudster, commonly referred to as a ‘Yahoo boy’, has killed his girlfriend in the Edjeba community of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State, with the tragic incident reported in the early hours of Monday 22 June 2026.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed the Delta murder on Thursday, while firmly debunking widespread social media rumours that the victim was beheaded.

According to local sources, the suspect allegedly used a knife to inflict fatal injuries on the young woman at his apartment on Ajidi Street.

The landlord raised the alarm after hearing shouts from the residence, prompting swift police intervention.

Officers arrested the suspect at the scene and recovered the victim’s body, which has since been deposited in a morgue pending the conclusion of investigations.

Residents recalled seeing the couple together the previous day, with the victim reportedly going to the market to buy food items to cook for her boyfriend.

Many in the neighbourhood knew them as regular companions who often drove around in the suspect’s white Lexus Jeep.

The gruesome killing has sent shockwaves through the Edjeba community, where residents expressed horror at the sudden violence within what appeared to be a familiar relationship.

This Delta murder adds to growing concerns about the link between internet fraud activities and associated social vices, including domestic violence, in parts of the Niger Delta region.

The police have assured the public that the suspect is in custody and that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. No motive has been officially disclosed as enquiries continue.

Authorities urged calm and warned against the spread of unverified graphic claims that could cause unnecessary distress to the victim’s family and the community.

Such incidents highlight the broader challenges of youth involvement in cybercrime and the urgent need for stronger social support systems and law enforcement vigilance in urban areas of Delta State.
