Party says the move is aimed at restoring stability and constitutional order as it restructures its leadership in Kano State

The African Democratic Congress has dissolved its Kano State executive committee and appointed a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs, saying the decision was necessary to preserve constitutional order, unity and continuity within one of its key state chapters.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Deputy National Chairman (North-West) of the ADC, Najaatu Mohammed, during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Kano.

Mohammed said the action was taken in accordance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act, stressing that the national leadership acted to address a leadership vacuum and safeguard the party’s future in the state.

“This important action is not out of preference but out of constitutional duty.

Every action taken has been guided by the constitution of our party, the Electoral Act and our collective responsibility to protect the future of the ADC in Kano State,” Mohammed said.

“Our constitution exists precisely for moments such as this. It provides a lawful path to restore stability, preserve continuity and ensure that the affairs of the party continue uninterrupted.”

She explained that the national leadership had fulfilled one of its core responsibilities by ensuring the party’s unity and constitutional integrity at a time when uncertainty threatened its organisational structure.

“When circumstances create a leadership vacuum within any political organisation, responsible leadership cannot fold its arms and watch uncertainty consume the institution,” Mohammed said.

“A political party is built on order, discipline and continuity. Without those pillars, confusion replaces organisation and uncertainty replaces confidence.”

Mohammed appealed to party members not to view the dissolution of the state executive as a reflection of the commitment or performance of members who had worked to build the ADC in Kano.

“The constitution of a caretaker committee must never be interpreted as a judgment on the commitment, loyalty or contributions of the thousands of faithful members of our party across Kano State,” she said.

“Far from it. Our members remain the greatest strength of this party.”

She acknowledged the sacrifices made by party faithful, noting that many members had invested their time, resources and personal reputation in strengthening the ADC at the grassroots, even during periods when the party faced political challenges.

Mohammed urged stakeholders to embrace the transitional arrangement and support the caretaker committee in the interest of party cohesion.

“If we remain faithful to our constitution and our democratic ideals, the future of the African Democratic Congress in Kano State will be stronger than ever before,” she added.

The newly constituted caretaker committee will be led by Alhaji Umar Bala as chairman, while Isma’il Musa will serve as secretary.

The restructuring comes at a period of heightened political activity across Nigeria as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general election.

In recent months, several opposition parties have reviewed their internal structures, strengthened state chapters and pursued organisational reforms as they prepare for future electoral contests.

Political analysts say internal stability and effective leadership will be crucial for parties seeking to expand their influence in strategic states such as Kano, one of Nigeria’s largest voting blocs.
