Seun Oloketuyi at 50: A Golden Journey of Vision and Impact

There are birthdays, and there are milestones that deserve to be marked as chapters in a remarkable life. Fifty is certainly one of them.

For Seun Oloketuyi, turning 50 represents more than a golden jubilee. It is a moment to reflect on a journey shaped by vision, enterprise, journalism, publishing, creativity, relationships, resilience and faith.

In a tribute marking his milestone birthday, Prince Adeyemi Aseperi-Shonibare described Oloketuyi as a man guided by a simple philosophy: if he can think it, he can do it.

And, according to the tribute, Oloketuyi does not merely dream. He pursues his ideas with determination until they become reality.

From Journalism to Industry Building

Oloketuyi’s journey in the Nigerian entertainment and media space began with journalism and publishing, including his time with Fame Magazine.

His career has since expanded across several areas of the creative industry. He has worked as a journalist, publisher, documenter, organiser, entrepreneur, public relations consultant and filmmaker.

One of the early experiences that brought him closer to Aseperi-Shonibare was the Police People’s Marathon in Abuja, an ambitious event that reportedly attracted about 23,000 registered runners, with Oloketuyi handling logistics.

The experience was significant because it reflected qualities that would become associated with his career: organisation, coordination, relationship-building and the ability to keep moving despite the challenges involved in executing large projects.

His interest in documenting Nigeria’s entertainment industry also led to the development of directories covering the Nollywood and Nigerian music industries.

The work reflected a broader belief that industries grow not only through talent and production, but also through proper documentation of the people, institutions and achievements that shape them.

The BON Awards Story

Perhaps one of the most significant chapters of Oloketuyi’s career has been the establishment and growth of the Best of Nollywood Awards, popularly known as BON Awards.

According to Aseperi-Shonibare, Oloketuyi sought his input and consultancy while developing the blueprint for the first edition of the awards.

What began in Lagos eventually developed into a platform that travelled across different parts of Nigeria, creating opportunities to celebrate and recognise contributions to the country’s film industry.

The BON Awards have subsequently been held in different states, reflecting Oloketuyi’s determination to build the platform beyond Lagos.

For his friends and associates, the growth of BON is a reflection of a central characteristic of its founder: consistency.

An idea, no matter how ambitious, becomes an institution only when someone is willing to sustain it.

Oloketuyi has continued to do that.

From Documenting Nollywood to Making Films

Oloketuyi’s relationship with the entertainment industry eventually moved beyond journalism, publishing and awards into filmmaking.

He has been involved in film production, including Blogger’s Wife, which was produced by him and released in 2017.

His filmmaking interests have also extended into stories connected with Nigerian personalities, politics, traditional institutions, culture and history.

Among the projects associated with his filmmaking journey are Blogger’s Wife, Last Man Standing, Adedibu, Awujale, Babalaje and Exco.

His interest in biographical and historical storytelling has given another dimension to his work, allowing him to explore personalities and events that form part of Nigeria’s social and political history.

The approach suggests an interest not merely in entertainment, but also in preserving stories for future audiences.

A Career That Keeps Evolving

Oloketuyi’s career has continued to evolve alongside the changing media landscape.

From magazines and directories to awards, film production, books and digital platforms, he has repeatedly moved into new spaces rather than remaining confined to one aspect of the entertainment industry.

His involvement with Wife Material is another chapter in that evolution, with Oloketuyi serving as Supervising Producer on the project.

The journey reflects an understanding that the entertainment industry is constantly changing and that creators, producers and entrepreneurs must adapt to new audiences and platforms.

The Author and Political Observer

Oloketuyi has also ventured into publishing with his book, How to Win Elections in Nigeria.

The subject represents another side of his interests, particularly his longstanding engagement with politics, communication, relationships, mobilisation and influence.

The book was reviewed by Wale Olaleye, Deputy Editor of ThisDay, while its launch brought together politicians, friends, family members and associates.

The publication adds another dimension to a career that has already crossed journalism, publishing, awards, public relations, filmmaking and entertainment.

A Man Who Builds Relationships

Beyond his professional achievements, Oloketuyi is also known for his ability to build relationships.

Aseperi-Shonibare describes him as a positive lobbyist and consummate networker who has developed connections across corporate Nigeria, government, entertainment and other sectors.

His ability to connect people and navigate different circles has been an important part of the growth of his projects.

But, as the tribute notes, his strength is not simply in accumulating contacts.

It is in building relationships.

Over the years, those relationships have helped create bridges between people, organisations and industries, while also supporting initiatives such as BON Awards.

The Tenacity Behind the Journey

Perhaps the most defining feature of Oloketuyi’s journey is persistence.

His story, as presented by Aseperi-Shonibare, is one of repeatedly pursuing ideas even when success does not come immediately.

That resilience has become part of his professional identity.

For Oloketuyi, failure is not necessarily an ending. It is another opportunity to learn, adjust and try again.

That mindset has helped him move from journalism into several other areas of the creative economy and build platforms that have endured over the years.

Beyond the Public Persona

Behind the journalist, publisher, filmmaker, author, organiser and entrepreneur is also a family man.

The tribute describes Oloketuyi as a devoted family man whose journey has been supported by his family, particularly the prayers and encouragement of his mother and wife.

For Aseperi-Shonibare, that private support deserves recognition alongside the public achievements.

The visible successes are only one part of the story. Behind them are years of sacrifice, encouragement, prayer, family support and perseverance.

Fifty Years of Grace

As Oloketuyi celebrates 50, the occasion is also being viewed through the lens of faith.

Aseperi-Shonibare drew on Psalm 145:3 to celebrate God’s preservation and the opportunities that have shaped Oloketuyi’s journey.

He also referenced Proverbs 22:29 in describing the value of diligence and skill.

The message is clear: the first 50 years are not being treated as the end of a journey, but as the beginning of another chapter.

The years ahead, the tribute suggests, should bring greater wisdom, influence, responsibility, impact and fulfilment.

The Road Ahead

At 50, Oloketuyi has already accumulated experiences across journalism, publishing, entertainment, awards, filmmaking, public relations and authorship.

But those celebrating him believe his biggest achievements may still lie ahead.

There are more stories to document, films to produce, books to write, institutions to build and relationships to nurture.

There is also, fittingly, the possibility of even bigger ambitions.

Aseperi-Shonibare jokingly imagines that one day the announcement could read:

“Seun Oloketuyi for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The humour captures the central message of the tribute: for a man whose philosophy is built around thinking, believing and acting, few possibilities appear completely out of reach.

And Then There Is Arsenal

No account of Oloketuyi’s personality would be complete without mentioning his love for Arsenal.

His passion for the Premier League club has become part of the lighter side of his personality, reflecting the same optimism and persistence that characterise his professional journey.

The tribute recalls Arsenal-themed birthday celebrations and the club’s victories around his birthday, joking that the team’s successes have sometimes served as birthday gifts.

Even Arsenal’s disappointments are turned into humour.

For an Arsenal supporter, hope is never really abandoned. There is always another season, another opportunity and another reason to believe.

That, perhaps, mirrors Oloketuyi’s own approach to life.

He believes.

He keeps believing.

And he keeps showing up.

The First Half Is Over

As Seun Oloketuyi celebrates his 50th birthday, the image that emerges is that of a man who has spent five decades building, creating, connecting and pursuing ideas.

His journey has moved from journalism to publishing, from awards to filmmaking, from books to digital platforms, while maintaining a strong connection with Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural landscape.

The first 50 years have produced experiences, relationships, projects and achievements.

But the final whistle has not been blown.

There are still more stories to tell, more films to make, more books to write, more institutions to build and more lives to touch.

The next chapter is waiting.

And if the philosophy that has guided Oloketuyi throughout his journey remains unchanged, then the message is simple:

Keep thinking.

Keep believing.

Keep pursuing.

Keep making it happen.

Happy 50th birthday to Seun Oloketuyi, a journalist, publisher, filmmaker, author, organiser, networker, builder and believer whose journey continues to demonstrate the power of vision, persistence, relationships and faith.

The first 50 years have been remarkable.

The next 50, by all indications, promise to be even greater.
