Bukola Sogbuyi-Whitney, who has lived with sickle cell disease all her life, has appealed for public support as she undergoes advanced limb preservation treatment after years of battling severe chronic leg ulcers.
In a heartfelt appeal, Sogbuyi-Whitney said her health challenges intensified in late 2018 when she developed chronic leg ulcers that have significantly affected her mobility, independence, ability to work and overall quality of life.
According to her, the condition has persisted for nearly eight years despite undergoing multiple surgeries, medical procedures, specialised wound care and numerous treatments aimed at saving her legs.
She is currently receiving advanced limb preservation treatment at Houston Methodist Hospital, where her medical team has expressed optimism about her recovery. However, she said the journey is far from over, as she still faces multiple surgeries, continuous wound care, medications and several months of rehabilitation.
Sogbuyi-Whitney explained that while she has health insurance, many of the treatment costs are not fully covered. She added that her inability to work because of her condition has made the financial burden increasingly overwhelming.
“I am humbly asking for your support as I continue fighting to preserve my limbs, heal, regain my independence and return to the life I love,” she said.
She thanked everyone who has taken time to read her story and appealed for continued support as she pursues recovery from the life-altering complications of sickle cell disease.
