The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, assuring consumers that there are no plans to review electricity prices in the short term.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu stated that while reforms in the power sector remain ongoing, the government is mindful of the economic pressures facing households and businesses and is committed to balancing sector sustainability with affordability.
“The Federal Government has no immediate plan to increase electricity tariff,” Adelabu said.
The minister explained that the government’s current priority is improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution rather than placing additional financial burdens on consumers. He noted that ongoing investments in transmission infrastructure and broader power sector reforms are aimed at delivering more stable electricity supply.
The assurance comes amid growing public concern over rising living costs following recent increases in petrol prices and other essential commodities. Consumer groups have repeatedly warned that another tariff hike could further strain households and small businesses already grappling with inflationary pressures.
Nigeria’s electricity sector has undergone several tariff reviews in recent years, particularly for Band A customers receiving higher hours of electricity supply. However, Adelabu’s latest statement indicates that no fresh nationwide tariff adjustment is currently being considered.
The Federal Government says it will continue pursuing reforms designed to strengthen the power sector while ensuring that electricity remains accessible and affordable for Nigerians.
