The National Universities Commission has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State, including Law, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
The programmes have been approved to commence on a full-time basis from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval was conveyed in a letter dated September 11, 2026, signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ahmad Gumel.
The commission also approved the commencement of academic activities by the university’s Faculty of Law, including the Bachelor of Laws programme in Common and Islamic Law.
Among the newly approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science and B.Sc. Information Systems.
The university also received approval for several health-related programmes, including Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry.
Other approved programmes cover education, environmental and applied sciences. They include Education Physics, Education Biology, Education Mathematics, Educational Management, Early Childhood Education, Adult Education, Arabic and English Education, as well as Parasitology and Entomology.
The list also includes Environmental Standards, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing, and Science Laboratory Technology with options in Biology Technology and Biochemistry Technology.
At postgraduate level, the approval covers PGD, Master’s and PhD programmes in areas including Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology. Master’s programmes in Banking and Finance and Accounting and Finance were also approved.
Reacting to the development, Gumel described the approval as an important milestone in the university’s effort to expand and modernise its academic offerings.
He said the new programmes were designed to respond to changing educational needs, particularly in technology, science education and health-related fields.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the expansion was intended to equip students with relevant knowledge and skills that align with current industry demands and emerging societal challenges.
