The State Police Bill is expected to be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, following its approval by 29 of Nigeria’s 36 state Houses of Assembly.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, disclosed this during plenary on Wednesday, describing the development as a major step towards establishing state police in the country.

Kalu said the Clerk to the National Assembly would forward the bill to the President later in the day after the proposed constitutional amendment secured the required support from more than two-thirds of the state legislatures.

The State Police Bill has received the backing of 29 State Assemblies.

Later today, the Clerk to the National Assembly will transmit it to the President for assent, he said.

The approval marks a significant milestone in efforts to amend the Constitution to allow state governments to establish and manage their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force.

The proposed reform seeks to decentralise policing responsibilities between the Federal Government and state governments, giving states greater control over security operations within their jurisdictions.

Supporters of the proposal argue that the current centralised policing structure limits the ability of security agencies to respond effectively to local security challenges.

Under the proposed arrangement, state governments would have greater responsibility for policing within their territories, while the Federal Government would retain the Nigeria Police Force.

The planned transmission of the bill to Tinubu represents the next stage of the constitutional amendment process following its approval by the National Assembly and the required number of state assemblies.
