The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a missing landlady whose remains were discovered inside a soakaway pit measuring about 30 feet in a neighbouring compound in Umueleghele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The Commissioner of Police, AIG Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the development on Friday, November 6, 2026, while briefing journalists on the command’s activities since September 11.

“The matter is being investigated,” Afolabi said, without providing further details about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death or whether any arrests had been made.
The discovery followed several days of uncertainty after the woman reportedly disappeared from the community, prompting residents to organise a search.
According to a community source who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident, residents initially suspected that the woman might have travelled away from the area.
However, concerns grew when she remained unreachable for several days, leading community members to alert the traditional ruler and mobilise local youths to search for her.
The search reportedly covered farms, footpaths, bushes and uncompleted buildings across Umueleghele.
“The traditional ruler was informed. The town crier moved. Youths were mobilised. For days, Umueleghele was searched, farms, paths, bushes, uncompleted buildings. The air was heavy with anxiety,” the source said.
The search eventually led to the discovery of the woman’s remains inside a soakaway pit in a neighbouring compound, reportedly bringing an end to days of uncertainty within the community.
The source described the discovery as particularly disturbing because residents had not expected the missing woman to be found within the immediate neighbourhood.
Community sources have also alleged that the deceased was involved in a land dispute with a man known locally as ‘New World’ before her disappearance.
According to the accounts, the woman had allegedly refused to sell part of her land to the man, raising suspicions among some residents about a possible connection between the disagreement and her death.
However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and the police have not publicly identified any suspect or confirmed a motive.
Further claims from community sources suggest that acid may have been poured into the soakaway pit and that some parts of the woman’s body were reportedly missing when her remains were recovered.
These disturbing allegations, including suggestions of a possible ritual motive, remain unconfirmed by the authorities.
The police have not disclosed whether forensic examinations have been conducted or whether investigators have questioned anyone in connection with the incident.
The case has raised concerns among residents about safety, unresolved land disputes and the need for a thorough investigation into violent incidents within rural communities.
Land-related disagreements have occasionally escalated into serious disputes in parts of Nigeria, particularly where ownership claims, inheritance and boundaries remain contested.
However, establishing whether the reported disagreement contributed to this particular incident will depend on evidence gathered by investigators.
The Abia State Police Command is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s disappearance and death, identify anyone who may have been involved and determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
