The management of Premier Records Ltd and its subsidiary, Premier Music Publishing Co. Lt, has announced the death of its managing director, Toju Augustus Ejueyitchie, fondly called Oga Toju.
In a press statement made available to Freelanews, the management revealed that Oga Toju died on Januray 29, 2021 and will be buried on February 22, 2021.
A graduate of Agricultural Economics from the prestigious University of Ibadan, Ejueyitchie left PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1974 as Senior Audit Manager. Other places he had worked before finally settling at Premier Records in 1994 included Chesbrough Company as chief accountant in 1986 and Majekodunmi Ventures/Ile-Oluji Cocoa Producing Factory as Group Finance Controller in 1990.
Oga Toju believed in fighting for the rights of music makers in ensuring that contents creators eat from their sweats. One of such humanitarian fights that stood out was with the management of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) under the leadership of Tony Okoroji when the deceased and Pretty Okafor insisted that the music must pay.
The duo obtained an ex-parte court injunction to freeze the bank accounts of COSON in 2019 when Okoroji was alleged to be involved in fraudulent activities.
It is no doubt that his death is a big loss to the Nigerian music and entertainment industry. He worked hard to see that the music industry rose to attain the greatness it deserved and was one of the surviving old professionals in the industry, with vast knowledge of the business of music.
“His demise will certainly create a vacuum in the industry. I pray that the almighty grant his gentle soul a peaceful and eternal rest. I condole with his immediate family and pray for God’s Grace upon them at this time of their agony and grief. Adieu Uncle Toju,” a fan mourned.
Oga Toju, who died at the age of 62, was born on May 11, 1952 in Kaduna.
