A bill for an act of the National Assembly to convert the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos to a full-fledged university, has passed second reading on the floor of the Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola, was introduced in the 8th Assembly but was not passed due to time constraints.
Adeola, in his lead debate, said the bill sought to upgrade the institution, established in 1947 during the colonial era, into a university of technology.
He added that the upgrade would stimulate the economy’s need for requisite technical, scientific and technological skills for its effective operation.
Adeola, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, said the upgrade would address the demand for technology oriented tertiary education that the mega city of Lagos required to function optimally in the interest of Nigeria.
He added that the upgrade was different from creating a new university from the scratch as was being done for most new universities.
