AMCE Abuja, Africa’s first Medical Centre of Excellence, launches in Nigeria with 500-bed capacity, state-of-the-art tech, and a mission to end medical tourism and brain drain

AMCE Abuja has officially launched, marking a groundbreaking milestone in African healthcare infrastructure.

Positioned in Nigeria’s capital, the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) represents a transformational leap towards healthcare self-reliance and innovation on the continent.

This ultra-modern facility is the result of a strategic partnership between Afreximbank and King’s College Hospital London, with robust backing from the Nigerian government.

Designed as a 500-bed quaternary care hospital—opening initially with 170 beds—AMCE Abuja is a pioneering response to Africa’s critical healthcare challenges.

“AMCE Abuja is not just a hospital; it’s a bold declaration that Africa can build world-class healthcare institutions by and for Africans,” said O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President.

Key Specialities and Facilities

AMCE will offer advanced care in:

  • Oncology
  • Haematology
  • Cardiovascular medicine
  • Surgery & Clinical Trials

The centre also features groundbreaking technology, including:

  • West Africa’s first 18 MeV Cyclotron
  • 3 Tesla MRI, PET/SPECT CT, and 256-slice CT
  • Africa’s largest stem cell laboratory
  • AI-powered diagnostics, linear accelerators, and cath labs

Why AMCE Abuja Matters

Nigeria loses billions of dollars annually to outbound medical tourism. The creation of AMCE Abuja aims to reverse this trend, ensuring that top-tier medical treatment is accessible within Africa.

In addition to retaining patients, it is strategically positioned to reverse brain drain by attracting and retaining African medical professionals both at home and abroad.

  • Human Capital and Economic Impact
  • Beyond its clinical capabilities, AMCE Abuja is also a major investment in human development:
  • Over 3,000 jobs created
  • Establishment of a Medical and Nursing School
  • A research and innovation hub for African healthcare advancement

This project is part of a broader vision: an Africa where health outcomes are owned, managed, and improved by Africans using global standards.

With AMCE Abuja, Africa has taken a major step toward ending dependency on external medical systems and charting a new era of medical excellence and innovation.
