The Super Eagles battle the Leone Stars on match-day five of the AFCON qualifiers at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia on June 18.
Head coach Jose Peseiro handed an invitation to four players from the NPFL for the game, with the three-time African champions booking a place at next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast, if they beat their hosts.
Rivers United duo Victor Sochima and Chidiebube Duru, Enyimba’s Olorunleke Ojo and Bendel Insurance’s Divine Nwachukwu were all handed call-ups for the game against the Leone Stars.
Speaking with The PUNCH, Anaemena, who has one cap for the Eagles, said he was pleased with the invitation handed to the home-based players and hoped more would be considered after a good display from the quartet.
He said, “It (invitation) shows that we are doing things right in the league and that we are heading in the right direction. Peseiro watched all the games during the Super 6 in Lagos and was impressed with the four players he invited for the game against Sierra Leone. I am confident that they will make us proud, which will pave the way for more players from the league.
“The last AFCON qualifier will be against São Tomé and Príncipe, a game that the coach can afford to hand more invitations to the home-based players, depending on how impressed he is with the four invited already.”
On his chances of adding to his one appearance for Nigeria, the 31-year-old defender said, “Personally, I am happy with my current form because I have been in good shape and playing good football at the moment.’’
