APC second-term governors warned they will lose party leadership if they seek immediate elective posts after tenure, says National Working Committee
All Progressives Congress’ second-term governors have been cautioned that any move to seek immediate elective positions after completing their tenure will result in the loss of their party leadership roles, according to clarifications from the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC).
The party’s National Headquarters emphasised that under its constitution, the National Working Committee holds overriding authority over state, local government and ward chapters.

This means that the committee has the final say in guiding party activities and leadership structures across the federation.
According to the clarification, sitting governors serving their second and final term automatically lose their position as state party leaders once they declare interest in another elective position.
This measure, the party said, ensures fair competition in primaries and prevents any undue advantage.
The nomination of acting state party leadership will be effected by the National Party Leader once a term-limited governor declares a new political ambition, the APC stated.
This is to guarantee free and fair primaries for all aspirants within the party.
The APC reiterated that the President and sitting governors have the first right of refusal to contest for a second term in office.
However, for other elective offices, all aspirants must emerge through transparent and credible primaries where candidates capable of delivering votes for the party will be selected.
It also noted that no governor has the right to impose candidates, as the list forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must reflect the genuine winners of such primaries.

The clarification, seen as part of the APC’s effort to maintain internal democracy and discipline, underscores the ruling party’s resolve to strengthen transparency and fairness ahead of the next general elections.
