Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari, and Senator Abdul Ningi have begun laying the groundwork for the formation of a mega party in preparation for the 2027 general election in Nigeria.

The move comes in the wake of Atiku’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election, where he lost to President Bola Tinubu, and Yari’s unsuccessful bid for the Senate Presidency, which was won by Godswill Akpabio, reportedly favored by Tinubu.
Sources reveal that Atiku has initiated efforts to establish the proposed mega party in collaboration with certain members of the National Assembly. The motivation behind this move stems from concerns within Atiku’s camp regarding disunity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the perceived overbearing influence of FCT minister Nyesom Wike in the opposition party.
It is reported that Atiku and his allies are considering replicating the merger strategy employed in 2013, which led to the formation of a mega party comprising Muhammadu Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
“They have made significant progress in the arrangements. They believe that the country is facing similar challenges as it did in 2014 during the era of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, hence their decision to form a mega party to challenge Tinubu’s dominance,” a source revealed.
The recent statement by Senator Abdul Ningi on the BBC Hausa Service is perceived as one of the moves by the promoters of the mega party. They aim to incite discord within the National Assembly, pitting lawmakers against each other and the Presidency to further their agenda.
