Chelsea’s attempt to secure Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion for £34.5 million (€40 million) has collapsed. The Spain U21 international, who was expected to sign a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge with an option for an additional year, will no longer be joining the west London club.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein had earlier reported the agreement, but the deal has fallen through due to significant issues in finalizing the 20-year-old’s contract. This development follows an earlier attempt by Chelsea in June to sign Omorodion, which saw a £27.4 million (€32.5 million) bid rejected by Atletico Madrid.
Omorodion spent last season on loan at Deportivo Alaves, where he made an impressive contribution, scoring nine goals and providing one assist, helping the team secure a 10th-place finish in La Liga. Born to Nigerian parents, Omorodion has pledged his international future to Spain, having been called up to their under-19 and under-21 teams.
Chelsea have been actively seeking striker options this summer, and their interest in Omorodion was separate from ongoing negotiations involving Romelu Lukaku and Victor Osimhen with Napoli. With the Omorodion deal now off, Chelsea have reportedly enquired about the possibility of signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid.
