WHO cautions Osun residents over rising MPox threat

WHO cautions Osun residents to remain vigilant against MPox, warning against bush meat and urging regular hand washing to prevent infection

Speaking at a community awareness session in Osogbo over the weekend, the World Health Organisation’s Technical Officer, Dr Fatoki Basheer, stressed that the state’s ability to curb previous cases should not make people assume that the virus has disappeared.

Basheer explained that the sensitisation programme, organised by the Osun State Government in partnership with WHO, was aimed at educating residents on the transmission and prevention of MPox.

He noted that MPox could spread through direct contact with infected animals or humans, and warned residents to avoid eating bush meat, which remains a major transmission source.

“Osun had confirmed four cases and two were in Osogbo. Though the state was able to fight it, people now act as if MPox has gone,” he said.

“We must continue to educate our people about its danger. Regular hand washing is very important. We have said it many times that bush meat is risky, but some people don’t want to believe it.”

The WHO cautions Osun residents to maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands frequently and ensuring food is thoroughly cooked before eating.

Dr Basheer added that carelessness and poor hygiene habits have been major causes of preventable infections, urging the public not to take health safety for granted.

He reaffirmed WHO’s support for Osun’s continued health campaigns and encouraged community leaders to champion awareness within their localities to protect lives.
