A Florida woman, Debra Newton, 66, has been arrested for allegedly abducting her 3-year-old daughter, Michelle Newton, from Kentucky in 1983. The arrest followed a tip to Crime Stoppers and DNA confirmation by her sister.

Debra Newton had created a new life and remarried, living under a different name. Her case once placed her on the FBI’s Top 8 Most Wanted parental-kidnapping fugitives list.
The original case was dismissed in 2000, and Michelle was removed from the missing-child database.
Michelle, now 46, had been living with a different identity, completely unaware she had been abducted and listed in the missing-child database for more than two decades.
Police notified her of her true identity, prompting her to contact her father, Joseph Newton, immediately.
“She’s always been in our heart. I can’t explain that moment of walking in and getting to put my arms back around my daughter,” Joseph Newton said. “It was just like seeing her when she was first born. It was like an angel.”
The arrest highlights the power of modern investigative techniques, such as DNA analysis and tips through community channels, in solving decades-old cases.
