Coach Chelle highlights squad depth ahead of Eagles vs Uganda

Coach Chelle of the Super Eagles stresses squad depth, merit-based selection, and collective responsibility ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON match against Uganda

Coach Eric Sékou Chelle has underlined the importance of squad depth and collective responsibility as the Super Eagles prepare for their final group match against Uganda in Fes, Morocco, today.

Speaking at a press conference, the Franco-Malian tactician emphasised that the tournament is not about a fixed starting XI but about ensuring every squad member is ready to contribute when called upon.

“Merit and form will determine my selections,” Chelle said, adding he aims to field “the best team at the moment.”

Chelle highlighted the need for improved intensity and sharper execution, urging the team to maintain pressure and consistency to meet expectations.

“The players want to win,” he said, noting the group’s hunger for success and understanding of their responsibility representing Nigeria.

The former Mali coach also acknowledged the weight of expectation every time the team steps onto the pitch, noting that the pressure comes from both the fans and the players themselves.

For Chelle, that pressure is a motivating force rather than a burden.

In a glowing tribute, Chelle restated his view that Victor Osimhen is “the best striker in the world,” congratulating him on his 27th birthday and wishing him continued success at the tournament. “He feels good and he’s focused, very focused,” Chelle added.

Nigeria have already secured progression to the Round of 16 after opening wins against Tanzania and Tunisia.

A draw against the Ugandan Cranes will ensure they top the group, giving Chelle’s squad a platform to maintain momentum in the knockout stages.
