The video, circulating on social media over the weekend, featured a man avoiding fuel queues by ordering petrol through a WhatsApp chat, followed by a rider dispensing fuel from a mini container attached to a motorcycle.
Dangote Petroleum officials dismissed the video as “fake” and distanced the refinery from the content. Group Chief Communication Officer Anthony Chiejina told our correspondent on Sunday,
“Fake! We are not in any way associated with this.” Another official emphasised that the refinery only supplies bulk buyers and has not entered into any agreements to distribute fuel through motorcycles.
The video, tagged ‘FuelUp’ and claiming to be powered by Dangote Petroleum, sparked mixed reactions. While some Nigerians praised the concept as innovative, others raised safety concerns over transporting fuel via bikes.
Experts have suggested that the clip could have been generated using AI, further highlighting the need for caution in accepting online content at face value.
Dangote Petroleum has recently invested in hundreds of Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks to enhance its direct fuel distribution scheme, which began in September.
The refinery is also preparing to scale up production from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day, reflecting its strategic vision to meet Nigeria’s growing fuel demand.
The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, is one of the largest integrated refineries globally.
In recent months, it has integrated modern technologies to optimise operations, ensure environmental compliance, and strengthen logistics infrastructure.
These efforts underpin Dangote’s commitment to reliable fuel supply, industrial growth, and long-term sustainability.
