Dangote Refinery capacity upgrade

Dangote Refinery capacity upgrade to 700,000 BPD by December 2025 will boost Nigeria’s refining self-sufficiency and increase petrol exports, reports say

Dangote Refinery capacity upgrade is on track to hit 700,000 barrels per day (BPD) by December 2025, according to a new report by Argus Media.

This marks a key milestone in Nigeria’s drive toward refining independence and enhanced energy exports.

The projected 50,000 BPD boost from its current 650,000 BPD will be driven by operational optimizations and strategic expansions at the multi-billion-dollar petrochemical facility.

Edwin Devakumar, Group Executive Director at Dangote Industries, confirmed the development:

“The refinery is expanding from 650,000 barrels per day to 700,000 barrels per day, and this should be completed by the end of 2025.”

This powerful upgrade follows increased processing efficiencies and improved output metrics. Several units, such as the RFCC and Penex process, are already operating at over 120% of their nameplate capacity.

As of July, crude intake reached 644,000 BPD—likely surpassing June’s record of 445,000 BPD. Meanwhile, gasoline exports have skyrocketed.

Dangote recently revealed that 1.35 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit were sold to foreign markets between June and July 2025.

Dangote Refinery capacity upgrade strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global petroleum market while reducing reliance on fuel imports.

With full-scale production and export operations underway, the refinery is set to become one of Africa’s most strategic energy assets.
