A British court has sentenced a Nigerian national, Daniel Odubanjo, to six years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman during a train journey, following an investigation by the British Transport Police.

The sentence was handed down at Chelmsford Crown Court on January 12, according to a statement published by the British Transport Police on Tuesday. Odubanjo was convicted of one count of false imprisonment and two counts of sexual assault.
The Daniel Odubanjo train sexual assault case arose from a report by a woman who said she was attacked while using a toilet on a train journey in Essex in November 2024.
According to the police statement, the incident occurred on November 29, 2024, when the victim, aged 21 at the time, was inside the train toilet and heard a loud bang on the door, initially believing another passenger was waiting.
As she opened the door to leave, Odubanjo allegedly confronted her, forced her back into the cubicle, locked the door and assaulted her.
Police said the victim struggled to escape and attempted to draw the attention of other passengers, but was dragged back into the toilet before eventually being released.
The woman later approached a member of train staff in a distressed state and reported the incident after leaving the train at Chelmsford, the statement said.
Police said that shortly after the first incident, Odubanjo approached a teenage girl on the same train, questioned her inappropriately and later sexually assaulted her after sitting beside her.
A nearby passenger intervened and restrained him until officers arrived.
British Transport Police officers arrested Odubanjo when the train was stopped at Hatfield Peverel station, just outside Chelmsford.
Following investigations, Odubanjo, 27, of King Avenue, Clapham, was charged and later found guilty after a trial. In addition to the six-year custodial sentence, the court ordered him to pay a victim surcharge and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
The order restricts Odubanjo from being under the influence of any substance while on public transport, at railway stations or on Network Rail property.
British Transport Police said the conviction reflected its commitment to tackling sexual offences on the rail network and protecting passengers.
