The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale in an exclusive statement disclosed that Bobrisky was apprehended for currency mutilation and abuse of the Naira, with the arrest taking place at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on April 3, 2024, at 3 pm.
“He is with us. We arrested him over currency mutilation and abuse of Naira. He is in our facility in Lagos State,” Oyewale stated.
This development follows recent discussions about the legal implications of cross-dressing in Nigeria. Just two days prior to Bobrisky’s arrest, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi had highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that cross-dressing itself is not a punishable offense, but being queer is.
Adejobi explained that without concrete evidence linking cross-dressers to the LGBTQ community, legal action cannot be pursued. Despite rumors and speculation, without substantiated proof, individuals like Bobrisky cannot be prosecuted.
In March 2024, Bobrisky addressed criticisms of his choice to be a cross-dresser in a lengthy Instagram post, asserting his right to personal choice and autonomy. He emphasized the importance of allowing others to live as they choose and defended his decision against societal judgment.
